About the Gifted & Talented Test
New York City offers gifted and talented tests for all children entering Kindergarten through the 3rd grade in order to enter a public school program with more specialized instruction and enrichment opportunities. Once your child is accepted, the program runs through 5th grade. The test has two parts (1) 30 verbal reasoning and comprehension questions based on the OLSAT and (2) 48 multiple-choice spatial thinking questions based on the NNAT. Visit the Department of Education website for more info and to sign up your child for testing.
Admissions are based entirely on the Gifted and Talented Test score and subsequent lottery placement. A qualifying score on the G&T exam (90th percentile) does not guarantee your child a seat. In many neighborhoods, more than half the kids are scoring above 90th percentile. This is why test prep is essential to increasing your child’s score.
Gifted & Talented Test Prep
Gifted and Talented Test Prep should begin at an early age to improve your child’s testing abaility and chance of success. In the past, Eye Level Learning Center on E12th Street was extremely helpful to our parents with outside of school tutoring and extra help so we looked to them once again for G&T test prep.
What you need to know: The Eye Level program utilizes a curriculum designed exclusively for them by TestingMom.com. The course is 14 sessions, including 12 instructional sessions, one pre-test, and one post-test. The pre-test and post-test are always one-on-one. The class format is available only for students testing into Kindergarten (i.e., in Pre-K now). The one-on-one format is available for any eligible student. The tuition for the course includes 14 sessions, classwork book, homework book, review book, and a bonus one-year membership to TestingMom.com, which has additional review resources.
