We’ve Expanded . . . Check out Kidz Central UK!

We are SUPER excited to announce that Kidz
Central Station has expanded—internationally! Yesterday we announced our launch of Kidz Central UK, a new website for finding and enrolling in kids’ activities in Hertfordshire, a suburban area outside of the city of London. Kidz Central UK features the same easy-to-use interface and search engine that has already helped thousands of parents find and enroll in kids’ programs here in NYC and has helped local kids’ programs to expand their reach to new parents. Using this new site, Hertfordshire parents can search for local kids’ activities by the criteria most important to them, such as age, location, class type, price, and more; sign up for trial classes; and directly enroll in a wide variety of programs in music, dance, art, cooking, and more.

Here’s what Kidz Central Station founder Lauren Pohl had to say:

“We are very excited about our expansion to the UK. Our experience in the New York City market proved that there is a need for one centralized location for finding and enrolling in local kids’ programs. Expanding to other markets was the natural next step, and we are excited about the great feedback we’ve already received in the UK market. The Hertfordshire area has so many amazing kids’ programs available, but until now there hasn’t been an easy way for local parents to find them. There is truly a need for this technology, and I have the utmost confidence in the energetic and extremely capable team leading this new venture.”

At the helm of Kidz Central UK is Julie Morrow, CEO, and Daisy Hodgson, director of marketing and strategy, both moms who live in Hertfordshire and have a strong familiarity with the area’s kids’ programs. Before joining Kidz Central UK, Morrow spent many years as an electronics engineer in the audio broadcasting, test automation, imaging and defense industries, and Hodgson was an auctioneer and valuer for over ten years.

Here’s what Julie Morrow, head of our new London team, had to say:

“After seeing the success of Kidz Central Station in New York City, we knew this kind of website was needed in our area. We have already garnered positive feedback from local parents and kids’ programs and look forward to what the future has in store for us.”

There are already over 1,500 classes populating the site and parents can choose from unique kids’ programs such as Tilly’s Dance Factory for dance and Wildchild Activities, which offers classes in archery, skateboarding, and outdoor bushcraft. Like Kidz Central Station, Kidz Central UK allows parents to sign up for semester, drop-in, and trial classes, purchase gift cards; read reviews; and earn reward points with each purchase through the Kidz Rewards program. Kidz Central Station’s popular birthday party finder tool can also be found on the UK site in the form of Hertfordshire’s Best Kids’ Birthday Party Finder, offering area parents a quick and easy way to find and request more information about kids’ birthday party programs and entertainers.

If you’re ever visiting the Hertfordshire area, or if you have friends who live there, spread the word!

Why Kidz Central Station Is Thankful This Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Day Turkey Cartoon Clipart

This time of year is truly the best—with Thanksgiving upon us and the holiday season right on its heals, it’s the perfect time to reflect on all of the wonderful things that have happened this year and what we have to be thankful for. So, we’d like to take this opportunity to impart five great reasons why we at Kidz Central Station are thankful this year. We wish all of the Kidz Central Station families out there a very Happy Thanksgiving!

1. We love what we do. We feel truly lucky that we get to go to work each day and help NYC parents (like us!) find classes and activities that make their kids happy. We all know what it’s like to search high and low for the right kids’ classes, so it makes us feel good to know that we’re making life just a little bit easier with Kidz Central Station.

2. We all have wonderful families who support us every day. Period, end.

3. We get to come up with new and unique ways to reach the NYC parenting community. From our recent event at Toys “R” Us to our Best Kids’ Birthday Party Finder, it’s exciting and fun to reach parents in brand new ways, and best serve their needs. If you have questions or suggestions, let us know!

4. We get to meet and learn about lots of NYC families. Each day, parents call and email us with questions about kids’ activities—what’s the best music class for a 6 month old girl? (There are tons!) Do you have soccer for a 3 year old boy? (Yes, of course!) Through these exchanges we learn about what parents are looking for, what they want, and how we can better serve them. Right now we are gearing up for winter classes, so let us know if you need help finding the best classes for your child!

5. We all get to enjoy the upcoming Thanksgiving break. This Thursday on Thanksgiving, we all get to take a moment to sit back, relax, and enjoy some much-needed family time (as well as Thanksgiving activities!). We hope you do too!

10 Ways Kidz Central Station Will Make Your Life Easier

Screen Shot 2015-05-04 at 1.43.10 PM
If you’re new to Kidz Central Station, or if you’ve only visited us a few times, you may not be aware of all of the things we can help you do to make your life easier. We know NYC parents don’t have a lot of time to search through the hundreds of of kids’ programs that exist, so we created the site so that you can search, find, and enroll in NYC classes and activities all in one place. In an effort to help all of you busy parents out there, here is a list of 10 things you can do on Kidz Central Station that will help you and your little ones make the most of the site and find the best activities for spring and summer!

  • Search classes, activities, and birthday parties by age, date, type, budget, and neighborhood to find exactly the right program for your child.
  • Enroll your little one in semester and/or drop-in classes at hundreds of local programs. Choose what fits your busy schedule—we’re adding new summer classes daily!
  • Send a direct request to any of the amazing birthday party providers on our Kids’ Birthday Party Finder, get for more information about their parties and request a party date.
  • Use our homepage event calendar to find one-time classes and activities. You can click on whatever date you are looking for something to do, and TA-DA!!, a list of activities for that date will appear.
  • Sign up for classes that have started at a prorated price! Just because a class has already started doesn’t mean your child can’t join the fun.
  • Still haven’t decided on a spring semester class or want to try something out for summer? Search for a trial class and get a taste of what it would be like if your child was enrolled for the semester. Once you try, you can easily come back and buy the class.
  • Read class reviews from the people you trust most—other parents. We think it’s important that parents review programs and classes on our site so that other parents can get an accurate view of the class and how their children will like it.
  • Share your findings with friends! You can email or share classes via Facebook from every activity page.
  • Purchase Kidz Central Station gift cards as birthday presents! Parents will love that their kids can try new classes, and will be especially grateful that it doesn’t take up any room in an NYC apartment!
  • Buy classes and save! Kidz Central Station awards Kidz Rewards points for every purchase, so by booking with us you‘ll earn discounts on future classes. It doesn’t get much better than that!

Finally, we are here to help you all day, every day. If you have any questions at all—about using the site, new classes, or anything else—email us at info@kidzcentralstation.com and we’ll email you back as soon as we can!

Why Your Kids Should Learn a New Language, And Early!

Do you ever wish you knew a second language? So many of us learned a little French in high school or a little Spanish in college, but can only relay a basic greeting or navigate the menu at an ethnic restaurant. In fact, only 18% of Americans report speaking a second language, while 53% of Europeans are bilingual (and some know more languages than two!). Since the U.S. is becoming more and more multicultural by the day, what can we do to give our kids a leg up on learning a new language?

Lango Kids

Start them early! According to François Thibaut, founder of The Language Workshop for Children, the critical period for learning is before age 12. At that time children are like sponges—they can more or less pick up a new language by being in an environment where they can hear it and practice. Thibaut says that if a child learns a new language before age 12, they will be able to speak without an accent—akin to a native speaker! After age 12, brain plasticity (or the brain’s ability to change and adapt to new things) decreases, and children will have to study to absorb a new language.

Besides picking new languages up quickly and speaking like a native, here are a few more benefits of learning a language at an early age:

  • Children who learn a second language early on tend to show more mental flexibility than their peers.
  • Bilingual children perform better in English courses than their monolingual counterparts.
  • Learning a new language has also shown positive effects on math and science skills.

According to Forbes, the demand for foreign language classes is at it’s highest since 1968. Luckily, New York City answers that demand with lots of language classes where your little ones can interact and play while learning Spanish, French, Mandarin, Chinese, and more. Here are a few great picks here on Kidz Central Station:

Language Beans: Mandarin Immersion classes.
Location: Carroll Gardens. Ages: 3–5 years

Lango: Spanish and Mandarin classes.
Location: Boreum Hill. Ages: 3–7 years

Language Workshop for Children: Spanish, Chinese, and French classes.
Location: Midtown East/Murray Hill. Ages: 6 months–3 years

This week, we wanted to share with you some fun drop-in class options that you may want to try and it’s easy to register!

Tumblin’ Kids: Age-appropriate gymnastic skills for ages 3.5-4 years old, are taught through a progression on all apparatus and tumbling circuits in MAGIC’s spacious, modern gym. Olympic equipment includes bars, balance beams, vaulting horse, rings and in-ground trampoline. Low student-to-instructor ratio ensures personalized instruction and safety. Music, Art & Storytime: For ages 2-3 years old, this favorite encompasses hands-on art projects and interactive musical activities. For every child under 3 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Each class begins with a story, which is imaginatively and dramatically told, and then progresses to a themed art project, which may include painting, collage, easel work or drawing. The class wraps up with musical activities such as singing, finger plays, rhythm instruments and other forms of self-expression.
This drop-in class is available on Tuesdays at 10:15 AM and Thursdays at 9:30 AM.

Piccolo Picassos: For ages 2-5 years old, children explore various art mediums and materials through creative hands-on projects. For every child under 3 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and visual/spatial processing are addressed alongside creative exploration. Children are encouraged to express themselves without worrying about making a mess! This drop-in class is available on Fridays at 9:30 AM.
