Happy New Year! 2016 is off to a very promising start, with classes starting throughout this month, and many new (and awesome if we do say ourselves) kids’ programs on Kidz Central Station. Want a heads up about what activities have been added to the site for winter? Here are a few of the new kids’ programs you may not have heard of before, but definitely should know about now!
Lango Lower Manhattan & Brooklyn. Based in Brooklyn (Boerum Hill to be exact!), this children’s language program not only offers little ones the opportunity to discover new languages, but also to engage in other fun activities! There’s an after school program for kids age 4–7, which includes either Spanish or Mandarin as well as music, dance, or art, as well as toddler playgroups for kids age 1–3 that provide an early introduction to Spanish or Mandarin through stories and music. You can also enroll your child in a weekend language, movement, and art class for a little extracurricular fun on Saturdays! The after school session has already begun (you can still join at a prorated price!) and the playgroups and weekend classes start January 23 and 25!
For classes and camps that get kids moving and playing around, Kids in the Game has you covered. This Upper West Side program has everything: sports and fitness-focused summer camps, “Kids Night Out” on Saturday nights (which is great for parents, of course, and even drop-in youth basketball clinics on Saturday mornings and afternoons—both uptown and at a downtown location. And, to top it off, the Kids in the Game staff is made up of former college athletes, professional dancers, and fitness instructors, so you know you’re learning from the best!
New York Fencing Academy (NYFA) is dedicated to teaching kids all about the fun of fencing! With a strong reputation in the fencing world (NYFA has developed numerous nationally-ranked fencers who earned championship titles, including a European Champion on the French Junior National Team!), this Brooklyn program offers a great intro package for beginners to the sport (age six and up), which includes four intro lessons to learn the basics, as well as equipment. Start any time, seven days a week!
For baby development classes, check out Child’Space, a program that focuses on how touch and interaction can help babies find more movement options, coordination, ease, and balance. Their classes are also wonderful for bonding with your baby! You’ll learn hands-on techniques to support infant development through touch, movement and song in a class specifically for your child’s age: Pre-Crawlers I is for babies 4 months and younger, Pre-Crawlers II is for age 4–12 months
