Now that it’s getting colder outside, finding an indoor spot for open play is a must—especially when your kids (and you) have been climbing the walls from being home all day. If you don’t have a go-to spot, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite NYC spots for open play—places that offer dedicated time for kids to run around, explore, and play the day away!
TLB’s playroom is every kid’s dream: an indoor play space with slides, a play kitchen and market, soft blocks, a rock climbing mountain, ride-on cars, a reading nook, puzzles . . . the list goes on. Open seven days a week, parents can visit this Upper East Side favorite at their convenience, and purchase single visits or five-packs in advance.
The Playroom NYC
This awesome facility is relatively new to the Upper East Side, and offers a super cool space to climb, slide, play pretend, and more! It’s open seven days a week, so it’s a great go-to for free time on weekdays or a rainy weekend afternoon. Play passes are $30 each, which includes two hours of playroom fun (and siblings are discounted!). Plus, there are classes in music, art, Legos, and more offered here, too, if you’re looking for a little more structure for your child’s play session.
A state-of-the-art gym on the Upper East Side, Gymtime is known for a variety of great classes for kids of all ages. While the program doesn’t offer open play all day long or for every child, anyone enrolled in the Tiny Tots program (age 7–18 months) gets unlimited complimentary open play during designated hours of the week. Parents/caregivers and kids can drop in at their leisure for play time in the Tiny Tot mini gym, which includes, slides, mats, mini trampolines, and more.
Little Peep Prep
This downtown program has open play classes for all ages, so you choose between a mixed age or babies-only open play session depending on your child’s age and developmental stage! In their New Baby Play session, bring you baby age four to eight months to their warm, inviting space for developmentally appropriate activities and parent discussion, and in the Big Baby Play session, kids age eight to 12 months can crawl, cruise, and play around at their leisure! Or, if you have siblings or like the idea of a mixed age class, Little Peep Prep’s Neighborhood Friends class offers kids 10 months to four years the chance to read, play pretend, create artistic masterpieces, and more!
14th Street Y
14th Street Y has tons of classes for kids—in music, language, baby development, and more. And beyond these specialized activities, this program also offers an open play class three times a week called Indoor Playground—which is exactly what it is. Children can run, climb, slide, and jump in the Y’s padded playroom, while parents and caregivers can meet and socialize for an hour or so.
