While the recent cold weather has made it hard for NYC kids to get outside and play, now that Snowstorm Jonas hit the city, it’s become even harder! Sure, sledding and snowball making are fun for a little while, but when your kids want to run around and get active this winter, what can they do?
Luckily for NYC kids, they have Kidz Central Station to help them (and their parents) find the best winter activities to get active this winter! Here are four of our picks to sign up for now!
Ajna Dance Company. A recent addition to Kidz Central Station, this program offers kids age 4 and up an education in Bollywood and Indian classical dance. With class offerings throughout NYC (UWS, UES, Tribeca and Park Slope), these classes teach basic body awareness and movement, storytelling, authentic dance technique, and choreography. During the 15-week semester kids learn challenging, yet incredibly fun Bollywood choreography and are able to show friends and family all they’ve learned in an end-of-semester performance! Classes are in session, but you can join now at a prorated price!
At Manhattan Fencing Center, kids age 7 and up can drop in seven days a week to learn all about the art of fencing! Home to the Olympic Silver Medal Saber Team (Beijing) and three top eight finishers in the London Olympics (among other prestigious athletes), this program has top coaches teaching your kids the necessary skills and techniques to become a real fencer! Sign up for their intro package on Kidz Central Station and your child will get two group lessons and two private lessons, plus equipment to use!
Soccer Kids NYC. When you think of kids’ soccer classes, you often think of little ones running around sprawling fields in the park with the sun shining brightly overheard. Not this time of year! With the parks thoroughly blanketed with snow, NYC kids need indoor options, like the ones from Soccer Kids NYC, a program with locations throughout Queens and classes for kids age 2–10. Not only do kids learn skills and drills such as dribbling, passing, and scoring, but they also learn important values such as teamwork, respect, and perseverance. Winter classes are either in session (you can join at a prorated price) or starting this week, and there are weekend options if weekday classes won’t fit your child’s schedule.
92nd Street Y. Basically, if you can think of a way to get active, the 92nd Street Y has a way for your child to do it. From swimming and tennis to parkour and zumba, if your child has an interest you can find it here. While Upper East Siders will find the 92nd and Lex location most convenient, with this many options the program is definitely worth traveling for. There are tons of classes starting this week and many more beginning in February, so search and enroll now so your child won’t miss a beat.
If it’s easier during a hectic week to schedule in your child’s fitness activity on your own time and in your own space, Energetic Juniors is the way to go. Offering personalized, in-home, one-one-one workouts for children (including special needs children), this program incorporates cardiovascular training, strength training, yoga, boxing and more into a fun workout for your child! Coaches use age-appropriate equipment to tone and strengthen, and also focus on improving self-esteem and overcoming any health challenges your child may face. Trial sessions are available, as well as small group sessions if you want to organize a fun activity for your child and his or her friends!
