Meet this week’s Head of the Class Mom, Stacy Grossman—founder of her own law firm and very proud mom to Owen!
Tell us about yourself. Why did you start your law firm?
I’ve been practicing law for almost 20 years, and specialize in trademark, copyright, publishing and media law. I’d been on a pretty focused path—I started my career at a small law firm, moved to a large law firm, then transitioned to become an in-house lawyer at a Fortune 100 company. At some point, I realized that I wasn’t taking advantage of my entrepreneurial spirit, and that I could be more fulfilled professionally by striking out on my own.
What is your secret to balancing work and family? Is there a balance?
I have no idea what that secret is. If you’re reading this and you know, please email me!
Share a funny story that helped you become a better parent and/or better at your job.
When my son was born, I was a little crazy about germs. I was Purell’s best customer, and everything had to be sterilized. I had a whole system for boiling, cooling, and storing water to mix with formula. Then one day I got a note in the mail—the soy formula my son had been drinking was being recalled because of a beetle infestation at the manufacturing plant. I couldn’t believe it! I had spent hours disinfecting everything, and despite my best efforts, my baby was drinking beetle juice! He was fine, and the experience made me laugh at myself and lighten up.
What has been your biggest challenge and/or greatest reward in the struggle for work-life balance?
The greatest reward is realizing that even though I’m not perfect and will probably never achieve perfect balance, I am proud of who I am as a parent and of who I am as a professional.
What is one thing you wish you knew before you had kids?
How totally amazing it is to be a parent and how huge the love is between parents and children.
If you could give other moms one piece of advice what would it be?
My mantra the first year with my son was: “If Jamie Lynn Spears can do it, I can do it!”
What is your favorite children’s book?
Goodnight Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann.
What has been your favorite kids’ class?
Weebop at Jazz at Lincoln Center—it’s amazing.
What is your favorite thing to do with your family on weekends?
Going to the beach.
What is your favorite rainy day escape?
The movie theater with reserved (and fully reclining) seats on 84th and Broadway.
Stacy is the very proud mother of Owen. After years of working for law firms and corporations, she formed her own law firm earlier this year: The Law Office of Stacy J Grossman. Stacy specializes in intellectual property, publishing, and general business law, and is very excited to be flexing her entrepreneurial muscles and growing her own business.
